Topic (follow-up to Friday, 11th February 2011):
What is blended learning and how do we increase it in mathematics lessons?

ColinTGraham:
Hello, and welcome to Monday's #mathchat
8:32 pm
ColinTGraham:
For newcomers, don't try to follow everything, just interact with one or two people. And, don't forget the hashtag ---> #mathchat
8:33 pm
ColinTGraham:
Today's topic is: "What is blended learning and how do we increase it in mathematics lessons?" #mathchat
8:35 pm
ColinTGraham:
We should maybe start, as we did last week, by defining what we mean by "blended learning" #mathchat
8:37 pm
Sundayteatime:
#mathchat new one for me never heard of blended learning?
8:38 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime The term has been misused or misapplied in a number of instances! #mathchat
8:40 pm
ColinTGraham:
The basic definition is that blended learning is a mix of different learning environments. Some use that to mean including tech... #mathchat
8:42 pm
ColinTGraham:
Blended learning, for me, also includes a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction, self-study, groupwork etc. #mathchat
8:44 pm
ColinTGraham:
Anyone else out there want to chip in on the blended learning definition? #mathchat
8:45 pm
Sundayteatime:
#mathchat isn't that what we all aim to use these days?
8:47 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime I think so, yes. The bigger question is the balance between online/offline and in-class/outside class #mathchat
8:51 pm
ColinTGraham:
How much of your current teaching or instruction could be done outside class? #mathchat
8:54 pm
Sundayteatime:
Not much as my classes aren't very self motivated particularly resit classes. #mathchat
8:56 pm
ColinTGraham:
Any other #mathchat tweeps lurking out there, or is it just Victoria and I?
8:57 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime When you say resits, is that GCSE? #mathchat
8:57 pm
tombarrett:
RT @ColinTGraham: Any other #mathchat tweeps lurking out there, or is it just Victoria and I?
8:57 pm
suburbanlion:
IMO, "blended learning" conjures up the wrong image. A "Blender" mixes indiscriminatingly. Learning should be more strategic. #mathchat
8:59 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion Does there not need to be some kind of smooth transition between modes or environments of learning, though? #mathchat
9:00 pm
suburbanlion:
We use "hybrid" to describe classes w/ in-class time & online activities. Try to take advantages of each aspect. #mathchat
9:01 pm
mattemagnus:
I'd love to join today. I love the subject, but it's late for me and I have a migrane... #mathchat
9:01 pm
suburbanlion:
In-class time is good for developing communication. Online activities are good for individualized practice. #mathchat
9:03 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion "Hybrid" certainly seems to be used when online/offline elements and technology integration are part of a course #mathchat
9:05 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion How about online instruction, by video say, or do you think instruction needs to be synchronous? #mathchat
9:07 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime Do you have the resources for increasing the online/offline aspects or is student attitude the main factor? #mathchat
9:07 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham my Ss have access to video lectures but the synchronous communication helps, even in online-only classes #mathchat
9:09 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion How has your teaching style changed to account for increased hybridization? #mathchat
9:11 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham I've tried to incorporate more collaborative activities in hybrid. Group work seems more difficult in online setting #mathchat
9:13 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion I could see things such as using Google Docs and associated chat working for collaborative work. Synchronicity, tho! #mathchat
9:15 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham the problem I saw was that Ss taking online classes did so because of scheduling issues. makes it hard to sync up. #mathchat
9:16 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion The trick then, is getting the balance between what can be done asynchronously and what synchronously. #mathchat
9:17 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion Do you take this into account when designing the course, or does the course change after sign-up to match needs? #mathchat
9:18 pm
Sundayteatime:
@ColinTGraham we have a decent vle and offer them college access to mymaths but haven't used online classrooms such as elluminate #mathchat
9:18 pm
bucharesttutor:
Can anyone explain what is blended learning? #mathchat
9:19 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham planned for it based on feedback from student surveys. #mathchat
9:19 pm
ColinTGraham:
The basic definition is that blended learning is a mix of different learning environments. Mix of face to face and online... #mathchat
9:21 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime Do the Ss see the tech as a supplement to 'normal' classroom instruction or do they make use of it readily? #mathchat
9:21 pm
EarlSamuelson:
RT @ColinTGraham: The basic definition is that blended learning is a mix of different learning environments. Mix of face to face and online... #mathchat
9:22 pm
ColinTGraham:
Blended learning, for me, also includes a mix of synchronous and asynchronous instruction, self-study, etc. Ryan prefers "hybrid" #mathchat
9:22 pm
suburbanlion:
@Sundayteatime We've seen a big difference in online classes due to web conferencing as supplement to MML #mathchat
9:24 pm
ColinTGraham:
@bucharesttutor Blended learning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia http://bit.ly/etfTdc is a good overview #mathchat
9:26 pm
ColinTGraham:
#mathchat RT @Sundayteatime: supplement definitely. I have forced them on it by putting assignments on there and that got positive feedback from some.
9:28 pm
ColinTGraham:
To clarify, in the UK, MyMaths refers to a subscription website for schools: http://bit.ly/11NlnQ#mathchat
9:29 pm
Sundayteatime:
@ColinTGraham oops sorry I forget we're international #mathchat
9:30 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime So, it sounds like the challenge for you would be in increasing the face value of the non-classroom elements #mathchat
9:31 pm
Sundayteatime:
@ColinTGraham hmm I don't think I'm quite there yet. Still trying to get them to value the face to face parts #mathchat
9:32 pm
Sundayteatime:
#mathchat though i'm still interested in the idea for a glimpse into the future #mathchat
9:33 pm
ColinTGraham:
I think the biggest challenge in blended or hybrid learning is that the instructor's role needs to change, often rapidly #mathchat
9:34 pm
Sundayteatime:
@ColinTGraham would it also mean being a 24 hr teacher? #mathchat
9:34 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion How much of your course content has been redesigned for the asynchronous aspects/increased online subscriptions? #mathchat
9:35 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Sundayteatime Not necessarily, because I suspect Ss aren't going to be 24-hour students! 24/7 access to instruction though... #mathchat
9:36 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham the content is nearly identical to online-only class & I think I'm one of few who use the face2face time proactively #mathchat
9:37 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham many others simply make the face-to-face component "open lab time" & answer Ss questions. #mathchat
9:39 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion You are dealing with college students, here, though. I'd expect greater responsibility for their own learning... ;-) #mathchat
9:42 pm
ColinTGraham:
How much of blended/hybrid learning will come from students 'making their own courses' in the future, do you think? #mathchat
9:46 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham Maybe "blending" classroom w/ social media might be a good 1st step towards Ss "making own courses" #mathchat
9:48 pm
ColinTGraham:
@suburbanlion Apart from the instructors, one of the issues is going to be accreditation, too! #mathchat
9:49 pm
ColinTGraham:
OK, everyone, it looks like we're not going to get much more on this today. Thanks for your participation. #mathchat
9:49 pm
suburbanlion:
@ColinTGraham thanks for moderating! #mathchat
