Topic: What is an effective use of class time for maths - reinforcement, learning, support?
As it happened on Thursday, 16th September 2010, 23:30 - 00:30 GMT

ColinTGraham:
Hello everyone, welcome to this week's #mathchat
11:32 pm
ColinTGraham:
If it's your first time, don't try to keep up with everything, just interact with one or two people, and don't forget the hashtag: #mathchat
11:32 pm
ColinTGraham:
Tonight's topic: What is an effective use of class time for maths - reinforcement, learning, support? #mathchat
11:34 pm
ColinTGraham:
Let's start with a ?n: Are these three elements separable, if so, what differences in methodology would you use for each of them? #mathchat
11:40 pm
ColinTGraham:
Anyone here tonight or is Twitter acting up? #mathchat
11:41 pm
padgets:
#mathchat woops forget the tag :-)
11:42 pm
padgets:
#mathchat well, I think it should be a mix of all 3
11:43 pm
ColinTGraham:
@padgets Do you see a difference between the 3? #mathchat
11:44 pm
Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham All these elements have their place. #mathchat
11:45 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Year7Numeracy Same question to you, Steve: Do you see a difference between the 3? #mathchat
11:45 pm
padgets:
#mathchat I see it as a process, I learn a concept, my teacher supports it with guided practice then it is reinforced by homework
11:48 pm
ColinTGraham:
@padgets So if it is a process does that mean you spend all of the time on each stage until it is complete? #mathchat
11:49 pm
republicofmath:
Q: "What is an effective use of class time for math?" A: Working together on projects, producing reports: http://bit.ly/cH7dbA #mathchat
11:50 pm
padgets:
#mathchat I look at it more as how a class lesson goes that i saw in one of our math teacher's classroom, like I learned it long ago
11:51 pm
ColinTGraham:
@republicofmath Slightly different topic... What is an effective use of class time for maths - reinforcement, learning, support? #mathchat
11:51 pm
padgets:
#mathchat in my science class, each process is done with multiple lessons with multiple modalities (sp?) :-)
11:52 pm
ColinTGraham:
@republicofmath There still needs to be some kind of time allocation for new concepts, supporting, guidance etc, even w/ projects #mathchat
11:52 pm
cybraryman1:
RT @padgets: #mathchat I see it as a process,I learn a concept,my teacher supports it with guided practice then it is reinforced by homework
11:53 pm
Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham Need to intro concept with starter Q, reinforce new learning and support understanding and app. Diff is in the app #mathchat
11:53 pm
jodylo:
RT @republicofmath: Q: "What is an effective use of class time for math?" A: Working together on projects, producing reports: http://bit.ly/cH7dbA #mathchat
11:54 pm
ColinTGraham:
@padgets So a single process with multiple application? #mathchat
11:54 pm
Saskateach:
I think it is imperative to build collaborative problem solving into any math period #mathchat
11:55 pm
padgets:
#mathchat one part that is sometimes left out is the reinforcement because of the need to get through the curriculum before the big test
11:55 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Year7Numeracy How does timing vary though not every task/project needs same amount of input? #mathchat
11:56 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Saskateach How much time would you devote to this, though? #mathchat
11:57 pm
Saskateach:
No 2 days may look same in a math class. Some times we model, explore, create, do... Variety is key to hitting all learning styles #mathchat
11:57 pm
ColinTGraham:
@padgets Do you see the rush to complete as inefficient then, or do you think the time needs to be spent on 'learning' new stuff? #mathchat
11:58 pm
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham It would depend on the day, the topic and the needs of the students #mathchat
11:58 pm
ColinTGraham:
@Saskateach So you are suggesting that an effective use of class time is to 'go with the flow' rather than allocating periods?s #mathchat
11:59 pm
padgets:
@ColinTGraham #mathchat we can be more efficient when we incorperate 2 or more concepts into one lesson, teachers under pressure to get done

cybraryman1:
@Saskateach Had math class in library (Stock Market Game) Great to see students working together in groups: http://bit.ly/5fd4kv #mathchat

Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham Great Q. Varies depending content. Eg. Introducing algebra last week took longer & next lesson spent more supporting #mathchat
12:01 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham Some call it go w/ the flow I prefer term responsive to students needs while honoring learning destination #mathchat
12:01 am
ColinTGraham:
With the 'rush to complete' is it better to know 50% of everything or 100% of half the curriculum? #mathchat
12:02 am
Saskateach:
@cybraryman1 Can never underestimate the power of student collaboration. They can learn so much from eachother #mathchat
12:03 am
ColinTGraham:
For science teachers who need to use maths, does it make it more difficult if you feel you have to teach the maths b4 the science #mathchat
12:04 am
danielespejo:
@Saskateach I agree! We need to honor the pace our students are at and schedule based on their pace. #mathchat
12:04 am
ColinTGraham:
@Saskateach That may be easier to achieve in an elementary/primary setting where lessons are much more theme or project orientated #mathchat
12:04 am
padgets:
#mathchat I often have to because my students cannot do the calculations I ask, such as simple Algebra, that is why I need a tutor :-)
12:05 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham Problem w/ that who decides which half of curric "covered". Ss may have gifts in strands that r never addressed #mathchat
12:05 am
ColinTGraham:
@danielespejo And damn the curriculum...? #mathchat
12:05 am
Year7Numeracy:
@Saskateach #mathchat Excellent perspective. Students needs do need to govern your approach to ensure learning is achieved
12:06 am
padgets:
#mathchat easier at primary not secondary, have a number of days, a curriculum some of us, not in Iowa, big test at the end of the year
12:07 am
ColinTGraham:
At around age 14 in a typical UK maths class, there can be a 5 or 6 year difference in ability. Whose pace gets honoured? #mathchat
12:07 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham Might b easiler but 4 myself as adult math learner I don't understand concepts as well on own as I do w/ others #mathchat
12:08 am
padgets:
RT @Saskateach:Might b easiler but 4 myself as adult math learner I don't understand concepts as well on own as I do w/ others #mathchat
12:08 am
danielespejo:
@ColinTGraham I teach math and science and yes it is a challenge to squeeze math pre-reqs into science class #mathchat.
12:09 am
ColinTGraham:
@Saskateach I think current adult 'inadequacies' are down to teaching methods from the past and 'rushing' through curricula #mathchat
12:10 am
ColinTGraham:
I don't know if it's a non-UK thing, but often it seems that middle school science teachers also have to teach maths too. #mathchat
12:11 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham Rushing through is an issue so is stagnating in one spot for too long. Important to find a balance. #mathchat
12:11 am
ColinTGraham:
I you feel you don't understand mathematical concepts, do you devote more (too much) time to make sure your Ss do understand? #mathchat
12:11 am
danielespejo:
@ColinTGraham it is a difficult challenge to balance. Do you damn the curric. or damn true understanding? #mathchat
12:12 am
ColinTGraham:
@danielespejo Or do you design curricula which provide understanding in the areas of maths which the average adult will need? #mathchat
12:13 am
padgets:
#mathchat well, I think it is a balance issue, I keep a calendar to help me keep pace, you?
12:14 am
danielespejo:
@ColinTGraham I teach both at HS level in Canada. Hard to specialize physics w/o taking math in uni. Keeps me well rounded. #mathchat
12:15 am
ColinTGraham:
How often do you meet the plans you set for yourself/class in terms of covering curriculum? How does it impact on balance/variety #mathchat
12:15 am
Year7Numeracy:
#mathchat scooting through the curriculum 2 keep up defeats the purpose. Concepts need 2 b understood before moving on. Balance is key also
12:15 am
cybraryman1:
@ColinTGraham Nobody does it better than math teachers! #mathchat
12:16 am
ColinTGraham:
@danielespejo I tutor A-level Physics (16+) and there is a strong cross-over between the subjects at that level #mathchat
12:16 am
Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham #mathchat Planning met but more time may be spent on some tasks than others. Be flexible. Ensure you teach to the needs of Ss
12:16 am
padgets:
@ColinTGraham #mathchat not very often :-) usually within 2-3 days of the target
12:17 am
cybraryman1:
Subject area teachers should work with math teachers. I (Social Studies) worked with math teacher when I taught stocks & economics #mathchat
12:17 am
danielespejo:
@padgets me too, but I've had classes a week behind or ahead at any given time. They always finish in the same place (almost) #mathchat
12:17 am
Saskateach:
@cybraryman1 LOL...math teachers do love to problem solve. #mathchat
12:18 am
ColinTGraham:
And create problems for themselves too! RT @Saskateach: @cybraryman1 LOL...math teachers do love to problem solve. #mathchat
12:19 am
padgets:
@danielespejo #mathchat yep, that is what happen's to me too, but sometimes like my inclusion classes are purposely behind
12:19 am
ColinTGraham:
Given that curriculum content is currently unchangeable... what do you see as the ideal function of the maths teacher in class? #mathchat
12:20 am
ColinTGraham:
By ideal function - reinforcer, teacher, guide, supporter, questioner... #mathchat
12:21 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham 1) Build students enjoyment and engagement in mathematics 2) Build their understanding of concepts & application #mathchat
12:22 am
Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham Some tasks may soak up more time than expected. Just need to be flexible #mathchat
12:23 am
Year7Numeracy:
@ColinTGraham Students need to enjoy the subject to be fully engaged. This builds trust and learning will prosper #mathchat
12:24 am
ColinTGraham:
@padgets Is an inclusion class one with students who may be learning disabled or have special needs - therefore need more support? #mathchat
12:24 am
Saskateach:
All of them RT @ColinTGraham: By ideal function - reinforcer, teacher, guide, supporter, questioner... #mathchat
12:25 am
danielespejo:
@ColinTGraham Give the Ss lrng strat so they become more independent with time. Use math as medium for these skills #mathchat #edchat
12:25 am
ColinTGraham:
OK, I am probably preaching to the converted - Go with the students and if you don't cover all of the curriculum, well... #mathchat
12:26 am
padgets:
#mathchat i and a sped teacher co-teach the class, it is the same curriculum just at a slower pace and different strategies
12:26 am
Saskateach:
RT @danielespejo: @ColinTGraham Give the Ss lrng strat so they become more independent with time. Use math as medium for these skills #mathchat #edchat
12:27 am
ColinTGraham:
@padgets Which of the two types of class do you feel is more successful? #mathchat
12:28 am
ColinTGraham:
@danielespejo That is certainly very much a HS teacher talking! Responsibility for learning... ;-) #mathchat
12:29 am
ColinTGraham:
@Year7Numeracy How do you decide on the maths/science balance or is there a clear separation between the two? #mathchat
12:30 am
Saskateach:
@ColinTGraham I agree but teachers should be conscious of strands & processes of math& ensure that they 're covered every yr #mathchat
12:31 am
padgets:
#mathchat I feel it depends on the content we are learning, if it is genetics, it is great, if it is cells, maybe overkill
12:31 am
ColinTGraham:
Out of time again, just when we're getting going! During the next few weeks, there will also be a chatroom open. #mathchat
12:32 am
ColinTGraham:
The chatroom should allow for more extended discussion of the topic of the week. Details will be on the Wiki #mathchat
12:33 am
ColinTGraham:
Follow @mathchat to keep updated! Wiki: http://mathschat.wikispaces.com/ Add some ideas for future topics too! #mathchat
