What are 'brilliant' activities with manipulatives?
As it happened on
Monday, 9th August 19:30 21:00 GMT
ColinTGraham
Hello everyone. Welcome to another chance to visit last week's topic: "What are 'brilliant' activities with manipulatives?" #mathchat
ColinTGraham
If it is your first time welcome! Don't forget to add the hashtag #mathchat to your Tweets
ColinTGraham
I am using TweetGrid.
http://mathschat.wikispaces.com/Z_Set+up+TweetGrid
#mathchat
ColinTGraham
Last time we started by discussing what we mean by manipulative. So when you talk about a manipulative what do you mean? #mathchat
Cassyt
I'm getting realtime search results at TweetGrid
http://tweetgrid.com/
#mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt It looks like you and I so far Cassy! When you talk about a manipulative what do you mean? #mathchat
Cassyt
Hmm that autotweet is annoying. #mathchat
Cassyt
Manipulatives: place value discs base10 blocks PV Chart fraction strips Algebra tiles... #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt You don't have to send the autotweet though! I usually type over it... #mathchat
ColinTGraham
More generally how about pencil paper fingers virtual...? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
RT @ajw0812: @ColinTGraham something that the student can physically hold and "play" with #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 Don't forget the #mathchat
Cassyt
Personal whiteboard created from page protector and inserts is one of my fave manipulative. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
#mathchat dice colored tiles candy 'anything' that c/b moved physically to help visualize situation in multiple ways
ajw0812
i wouldn't include things like a pencil unless it was somehow used to help with the lesson objective #mathchat
ColinTGraham
How about online applications? Would you say any of those were manipulatives? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
Used how? RT @Cassyt: Personal whiteboard created from page protector and inserts is one of my fave manipulative. #mathchat
ajw0812
perhaps being semantic. online not a manipulative unless student is controlling cursor #mathchat
ColinTGraham
My definition of a manipulative is anything which gives a handson experience or chance to explore a concept/activity #mathchat
Cassyt
Provide a problem series of equations for mental math calculation & have students flip upside down.... #mathchat
Cassyt
I say "Show me the answer" and they hold them over their heads. I can assess a classroom of kids in 10 sec. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt Do they write on their personal whiteboards with an erasable pen? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
Student control being key here RT @ajw0812: perhaps being semantic. online not a manipulative unless student is controlling cursor #mathchat
Cassyt
Prefer page protectors over showerboard because I can insert 100's charts games blank number bonds PV charts. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt page protectors may be an American or Canadian term... basically a letter/A4 plastic folder that holds one or two sheets? #mathchat
POWERORGmath
@ColinTGraham #mathchat I luv library of virtual manipulatives nctm.org Illuminations
ColinTGraham
Link? RT @Fouss: @ColinTGraham @Cassyt Just found whiteboard crayons the other day they work! And won't dry out. :) #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @ColinTGraham: My defin of a manipulative=anything which gives a handson experience/chance to explore a concept/activity #mathchat

I tell students: "Let me hear your markers "click" to remind them to get caps on tight. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @Cassyt: Prefer page protectors over showerboard because I can insert 100's charts games blank number bonds PV charts. #mathchat
Cassyt
I sue baby socks for erasers. They can be washed they hold the marker & they're 6 socks for $1 at the local dollar store. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
@Cassyt #mathchat I have copied charts on cardstock & laminated; works well too
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt I think you mean use not sue! #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt How is an individual whiteboard a manipulative rather than a piece of paper apart from eco issues! #mathchat
Cassyt
The laminator at school never worked well. :( @POWERORGmath #mathchat
ColinTGraham
RT @Fouss:
http://bit.ly/dauhuG
. I found them at Toys 'r Us B1G1 free. @jybuell $2 a box I think. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Fouss don't forget to use #mathchat
POWERORGmath
#mathchat we are purchasing interactive devices for Mobile Math Lab that are like Smartbds on most surfaces
POWERORGmath
@Cassyt #mathchat ... Sheet projectors reign supreme!!
ColinTGraham
I have to say I see the personal whiteboard as part of increasing student voice rather than being a manipulative directly #mathchat
Cassyt
Guess it depends on the definition. RT @ColinTGraham: @Cassyt How is an indivi whiteboard a manipulative #mathchat
iteachyear4
RT @Cassyt: I tell students: "Let me hear your markers "click" to remind them to get caps on tight. #mathchat <I'll remember that one!
ColinTGraham
Let's return to some of our earlier comments about physical objects such as blocks tiles etc. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
What activities do you do where you always introduce some kind of physical manipulative including online with student control #mathchat
Cassyt
How about place value disks? They are more abstract than base 10 blocks and you can make or buy them. FYII work with elem. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
For anyone just joining us: "What are 'brilliant' activities with manipulatives?" #mathchat
Cassyt
No access to online in school I taught at for a group of elem. students only 2 pcs in classroom & no projector. #mathchat
iteachyear4
Things like market places with money and real objects? #mathchat
ajw0812
when first introducing coordinate plane will have plane drawn on floor and have students "walk around" as points #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 Does your classroom have carpet squares or similar? I used to annoy my head of dept by always asking for these! #mathchat
iteachyear4
@ajw0812 Do similar but we have a blank 100square painted on playground which is handy #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@iteachyear4 How would you organize the market place? Real money/photocopies/coins/foreign exchange? Ss decide product prices? #mathchat
ajw0812
I have used algeblocksl oneonone with students who are struggling with integer subtraction particularly with negative numbers #mathchat
Cassyt
Did this to song "Tootsie Roll" RT @ajw0812: introduce coord. planedraw plane on floor & have students walk points #mathchat
ajw0812
@colintgraham no tile floors. would use blue tape to mark the floor. tough to do if you share classrooms #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@Cassyt Place value disks DIY... any other examples of DIY because of lack of access to IT or other expensive resources #mathchat
Cassyt
I invest in connect a cubes but you could use 4 prong Legos. #mathchat
Cassyt
Made a # line the length of classroom wall with laminated paper & velcro strip for line... #mathchat
ajw0812
@cassty i like the use of music. i'll have to give it a go! #mathchat
iteachyear4
@ColinTGraham I let them decide what they wanted to sell and what price. Or have objects I can buy before and use plastic money #mathchat
iteachyear4
Would Numicon be suitable contribution to this discussion? #mathchat
Saskateach
@Cassyt how do you use place value disks? Are they different than using place value cards? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
My 'musthave' for manipulatives are the Lego red bucket a stack of origami (square paper) and cuisenaire rods #mathchat
Cassyt
...used index cards w/fractions %age money time etc.. (w/opposite velcro piece) to put on the number line. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@iteachyear4 More information about Numicon? link/description for those unfamiliar with it... #mathchat
fnoschese

Cassyt
With PV chart. RT @Saskateach: how do you use place value disks? Are they different than using place value cards? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
What 'musthave' manipulatives would you put on your list? #mathchat
iteachyear4
Numicon
http://bit.ly/a4YfdI
Got given some last yearstill not sure I see real benefits over other ways although some swear by it #mathchat
Cassyt
Number disks look like this:
http://bit.ly/biv4EE
ualthoughgh I've used paper ones & modified poker chips. #mathchat
Saskateach
@Cassyt Oh I see so place value disks will be less cumbersome than base 10 blocks. Love it!!! #mathchat
ajw0812
for algebra classes I would suggest graphing calculators! #mathchat
Cassyt
@Saskateach And more abstract. Didn't they use these at your PD today? #mathchat
oxfordlearning
RT @POWERORGmath: #mathchat dice colored tiles candy "anything" that c/b moved physically to help visualize situation in multiple ways
ColinTGraham
Do any of you get the students to make their own set of manipulatives? For example I always get them to make their own tangrams #mathchat
ColinTGraham
There is a lot of resistance even now to graph calc use! RT @ajw0812: for algebra classes I would suggest graphing calculators! #mathchat
Cassyt
You bet depending on age. RT @ColinTGraham: Do any of you get the students to make their own set of manipulatives? #mathchat
iteachyear4
I used to love graphing calculators! Wish I taught where they could be used! #mathchat
ajw0812
interesting. Resistance in that it will do work for the student? And that student will not understand underlying principles? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
Do you investigate different dice shapes or use the 'usual' 6sided cubes? RT @POWERORGmath: dice... #mathchat
ajw0812
I understand that but if taught and used correctly I think it is a necessary skill to know how to use a graphing calc properly #mathchat
ajw0812
I understand that but if taught and used correctly I think it is a necessary skill to know how to use a graphing calc properly #mathchat
Saskateach
@Cassyt Haven't used disks yet but still have an hour to go. Maybe they are yet to come. #mathchat
iteachyear4
Books are a great source of ideas too. Egg Drop Blockhead Fibbonachi etc #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 Resistance comes because of assessment issues I think. Not enough imagination about using graph calcs to build understdg #mathchat
ajw0812
for probability have used numbered cubes playing cards and coins as manipulatives #mathchat
ColinTGraham
If graphical calcs are not available then GeoGebra and other online manipulatives may offer an alternative. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
#mathchat sticky notes for dec frac % conversion tables (works well with pushpins/paper on interactive bulletin boards)
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 I always use Smarties or M&Ms for probability! Boxes of wine gums too... #mathchat
ColinTGraham
I mentioned fingers... Does anyone teach finger multiplication or addition (Chisenbop for example)? #mathchat
ajw0812
@colintgraham can never go wrong using mms to determine experimental probability of how many reds are in a bag! #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
It's my big rule of thumb to always make our own manipulatives with students but also use wellcrafted tools like compasses #mathchat
Cassyt
Wine gums? Sounds illegal here! RT @ColinTGraham: @ajw0812 I always use Smarties or M&Ms... Boxes of wine gums too... #mathchat
ajw0812
i noticed on the links from last week there were two using fingers (multiplication and binary adding) #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@POWERORGmath Do you use the bulletin board/pushpins so fractions % conversion etc can be reordered or for grouping? #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @ColinTGraham: If graphical calcs are not available then GeoGebra and other online manipulatives may offer an alternative. #mathchat
MaryKayG
Use collection of square tiles to determine if # of tiles is prime or composite. The visual is key for many students. #mathchat
Cassyt
Not Chisenbop. Have made & used abacus. RT @ColinTGraham: I mentioned fingers. (Chisenbop for example)? #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
I use raisins and nuts we avoid sugar to prevent "sugar crash" during math activities. Also Apple Math is popular #mathchat
POWERORGmath
Yes RT @ajw0812: if taught and used correctly I think it is a necessary skill to know how to use a graphing calc properly #mathchat
ColinTGraham
No wine involved other than the names on the different shapes and colours! RT @Cassyt: Wine gums? Sounds illegal here! #mathchat
Saskateach
I also like to use natural items as manips in my class to honor nature and First Nations students (ie. rocks shells pine ones). #mathchat
ajw0812
@cassyt My US interpretation. Wine for teacher at night while lesson planning. Gummies for students during instruction! #mathchat
POWERORGmath
Different dice shapes and die with operations add variety w/random order of operation practice #mathchat
ColinTGraham
To avoid confusion:

MariaDroujkova
Apple math brings up a lot of parent stories from my math clubs
http://1ps.us/er5f2r
#mathchat
Cassyt
I like Marcy Cook math tile activities: find the x tile and mixed op balance cards. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @MaryKayG: Collection of square tiles to determine if # of tiles is prime or composite. The visual is key for many students. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
What areas of the curriculum would you like to have manipulatives for but find it difficult to introduce them? #mathchat
iteachyear4
Bags of coins probability of pulling out a 5p etc or pouring them out onto table how many heads/tails #mathchat
ajw0812
i liked the idea of having students come up with ideas for manipulatives. Has anyone done this? How did it work? #mathchat
vickyloras
RT @Saskateach I also like 2use natural items as manips in my class 2honor nature + #FirstNations ss(ie.rocksshellspine cones). #mathchat
ColinTGraham
RT @POWERORGmath: @ColinTGraham Used for reordering. Can be used for regrouping matching equivalent fractions also #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
@ajw0812 I invited kids to figure out how to play 3d tictactoe and every kid came up with their own manipulative for dimensions #mathchat
ajw0812
@ColinTGraham I've only taught Algeb. Would like manips for tough areas like system of equations and square roots/exponents #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 I have rarely found that students (11+) can 'create' mathrelated anything when that was the focus of the task... #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @ColinTGraham: What areas of the curriculum would you like to have manipulatives for but find it difficult to introduce them? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@ajw0812 You should definitely check out the calculus map!

MariaDroujkova
Topology manipulatives had me in knots... But people gave good advice I'll try when the Club starts
http://1ps.us/kd2hb3
#mathchat
ajw0812
@MariaDroujkova Neat! Did it take some time to explain the 3D aspect to some students? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@MariaDroujkova Haha! Maths joke there Maria! I prefer topological doughnuts myself... ;) #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
@ColinTGraham We made abacuses for different bases (each kid picked a base) and that was a semiopen task (79 yo). #mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @ColinTGraham: @ajw0812 You should definitely check out the calculus map!

#mathchat
POWERORGmath
RT @ajw0812: @ColinTGraham I've only taught Algeb. Would like manips for system of equations & sq roots/exponents #mathchat
ColinTGraham
Age seems to be a factor. At what point do you or your students think manipulatives should not be used? Whether helping or not #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
@ajw0812 Well we played online 3d and 4d tictactoe first then the challenge was to make it in our physical space. #mathchat
iteachyear4
@ColinTGraham Is it age or ability that is the limit? #mathchat
MaryKayG
@ajw0812 Did this with new manipulatives pretended to lose the instruction page and asked class for help/ideas for their use. #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
@ColinTGraham "A topologist is someone who does not know the difference between a cup and a doughnut" #mathchat
Cassyt
Should be used to providea visual when introducing new concepts but goal should be for students to move to more abstract . #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@iteachyear4 I have seen it as being both. Some 'able' Ss don't want to 'play'. Older Ss don't want to be seen relying on manips. #mathchat
POWERORGmath
#mathchat Gr8 ideas for manips. when studs make up own games to demonstrate understanding of theme based concepts (geom alg etc)
ColinTGraham
A common theme with most mathematics teaching seems to be: Concrete/physical > Pictorial/visual > Abstract/symbolic #mathchat
MaryKayG
@ColinTGraham I don't think teachers should ever withdraw access to manipulatives. #mathchat
ajw0812
@MaryKayG Clever! The "old lose the instruction page" trick. What grade do you teach? #mathchat
iteachyear4
@ColinTGraham Suppose my experience is limited to upper primary but I have seen LAs being happier to use them over HAs #mathchat
MaryKayG
@Cassyt I agree but I should still be able to use manipulatives even though you are ready for the abstract. #mathchat
Cassyt
It's what top countries do & the NCTM recommends. RT @ColinTGraham: Concrete/physical > Pictorial/visual > Abstract/symbolic #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@MaryKayG I have also used the instruction book by cutting it up into separate instructions and getting Ss to reconstruct it #mathchat
stangea
@Saskateach: I also like to use natural items as manips in my class. I like the idea of natural for whatever reason. #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
@Saskateach I use things that feel look and possibly smell good. A lot of natural materials do but some plastic counters do too #mathchat
ColinTGraham
So in the final ten minutes... What do you think are absolutely essential manipulatives & activities for introducing concepts? #mathchat
ColinTGraham
@stangea When you say natural do you mean pebbles rocks trees flowers etc...? #mathchat
MariaDroujkova
Essential manipulatives! Paper scissors glue. Wire. Modeling clay. Graph paper. "Multitudes with attributes" (rich counters) #mathchat
ColinTGraham
Essentials for me: dice (tetrahedral cubic dodecahedral icosahedral) huge stack of paper lego red bucket cuisenaire rods #mathchat
MaryKayG
If I had access to only 1 manipulative I'd choose 2sided square tiles but I'd also want pattern blocks geoboards and Cuis.rods #mathchat
Saskateach
@ColinTGraham Yes items from nature not necess. a store. Cheaper and honoring to nature. #mathchat
ajw0812
i think the key is "introduction". Use them in the beginning so everyone deeply understands concepts. #mathchat
ColinTGraham
And let's not forget packets of sweets/chocolates/etc! #mathchat
ColinTGraham
OK everyone we are almost out of time again! Feel free to keep chatting and welcome to our newcomers! Use www.blastfollow.com + #mathchat
ajw0812
so algeblocks for beginning of algebra. and GeoGebra for graphing. candy for probability ... #mathchat
