Hello, everyone (anyone?) we are going to revisit last week's topic #mathchat
discomfortzone:
Hi, first time in #mathchat today. I teach grade 3/4 at an international school. Maths is my passion.

ColinTGraham:
As we come from different countries/systems including age ranges is prob best idea rather than year/grade... #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Today's chat will go on the Wiki about 30 minutes after we finish. #mathchat

@tcash In my small class of 10 last yr I had 10 diff levels of maths and english lang. rotations was a way forward in maths 4 me. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
RT @tcash: What experiences do you have with catering to a wide range of abilities within a single math class? #mathchat
discomfortzone:
Rotations allows me to get the students working independently, in groups and pair; and I can work with groups/ind. as needed #mathchat

@iteachyear4 What age do you teach? #mathchat
tcash:
@discomfortzone Yes, centers, or carousel activities are wonderful for small grp instruction - require planning but so worthwhile! #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@tcash Year 4, so they're 8-9 years old #mathchat
tcash:
What strategies to you use to determine ability? Pre-assess? #mathchat
discomfortzone:
@tcash Planning yes, but definitely makes the "instruction" phase easier. My students are independent. which takes time and work #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@ColinTGraham School does literacy in small groups of 6-8 chn, mixed gender, set by ability. Results positive! Why not in maths?#mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
To be honest, my resource is my students. I start with a piece of lit. See what they can do & go from there. #mathchat
tcash:
I've had some success with an afterschool Math Club for kids who were really struggling - significant gaps #mathchat

Supper time. Will rejoin #mathchat after supper
tcash:
@iteachyear4 Absolutely! Math is a language too! #mathchat
discomfortzone:
Our maths programme is flexible as well. I want to start using First Steps Math more. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@iteachyear4 There has been some discussion that having separate maths lessons for boys and girls helps both, esp. boys... #mathchat
famousmistered:
@@KnikiDavies Great ideas to embed math in other activities. Many classes check weather daily -- why not also chart temps? #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
I've got several pbls. I use & a great act. calld Mystery Bags which helps 2 build on nmbr skills, fr there we work on strategies #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@tcash Exactly! Not seen like that though. @ColinTGraham gave me some great ideas about lunch clubs etc though that I'll be trying #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Great idea! RT @tcash: I've had some success with an afterschool Math Club for kids who were really struggling - significant gaps #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@ColinTGraham Not sure that I really notice a gender split in my group. EAL is however an issue #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Especially if you agreed with my latest blog post! RT @tcash: @iteachyear4 Absolutely! Math is a language too! #mathchat

Or when doing coin drives to raise $, also make kids responsible for counting up and perhaps charting twd goal. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Is this a text only or does it include online too? RT @discomfortzone: ... I want to start using First Steps Math more. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
EAL = English as an Additional Language (ESL/ESOL/EFL...) #mathchat
MrMalcontent:
#mathchat with lots of good planning! Usually teach 2/3 lessons at a time!
discomfortzone:
Investigations are not just for G&T though. In my school (IB PYP), math teaching is inquiry-based #mathchat
cjs76:
Ran a breakfast maths club for more able - 8am sorts out those who can be bothered and those who can't #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog Can you share how Mystery Bags works? #mathchat

ColinTGraham:
Get the parents to help out? ;-) RT @KnikiDavies: #mathchat I ran a maths club once ... parents thought it would be good for them!
maxxakahotdog:
MB R lunch bags with unifix cubes inside. a set # in them. kids guess how many & then pull them out. Build the # & represent it #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
check out Family Math Nights and Math Field Day at the bottom of @cybraryman1's Math Pagehttp:bit.ly/1PAeOz #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Numbers can be all the same or diff. Could compare what you've got to someone elses or talk about P.V. #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Great for building number sense, seeing what a quantity looks like, Also use them to prb. solv with #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
How do you deal with the latter? RT @cjs76: ... 8am sorts out those who can be bothered and those who can't #mathchat
tcash:
We had a math morning where parents could come and participate, float from one math class to another, learn with kids, effective! #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
I focus on BERCS in my room. It's an acronym colleagues & I came up with for math workshops we do. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
How do you handle the language problem? RT @iteachyear4:...EAL is however an issue #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
B-build, E-explain, R-represent, C-compare, S-synthesize. It's the heart of our curr. #mathchat If kids can do all of them, they've got it.
mrdfleming:
@maxxakahotdog What does BERCS stand for #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Anyone doing projects or work where the number is not so obvious... engineering, music, language teaching...? #mathchat
tcash:
@maxxakahotdog Very interesting! Souns a lot like Bridges Math from Math Learning Center #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@mrdfleming Just sent it out #mathchat I think of it as the stages some kids need to build understanding
iteachyear4:
@ColinTGraham I have 3 other adults in room who have to support them. It's not easy with range of different languages in 1 class !#mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@tcash I'll have to check out Bridges Math #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
With respect to creative maths activities: http://bit.ly/d2WCof has listed a few. I'll 'steal' this idea for the discussion page #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@iteachyear4 That's the beauty of math it's one lang. that's spoken world wide, it's the eng. lang that's the barrier #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog Thanks for the description #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@maxxakahotdog Yeah exactly. I try to make it as much number based as possible, but sometimes it's not possible #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Links to resources and websites will be posted to the Wiki sometime during the week! Follow @mathchat to get the updates... #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@ColinTGraham No problem. Mys. Bags R far more indepth then I could describe in 140 char. #mathchat Quite versatile.
ColinTGraham:
How about manipulatives - do students use them on a math test? When do they stop using manipulatives? #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
To what extent do you or can you use (new) technology to assist with differentiated instruction in maths? #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
I think they should use them for as long as needed. I love cuisenaire rods as a manipulative #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
I think Twitter is experiencing problems! #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
OK, we are into the final 30 minutes any burning issues or questions related to DI you want to share? #mathchat

@suser1 Thanks It's very handy for kids to understand & teachers as well. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
To what extent do you or can you use (new) technology to assist with differentiated instruction in maths? #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
#mathchat That's a really interesting question. I have stud. use the document camera to have kids come up & explain math strategy to class
ColinTGraham:
RT @KnikiDavies A Y3 boy scored 100% in the Y6 papers despite teacher not realising he was meant to have calculator for 1 of them! #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
When kids hear other kids talk about strategies it helps b/c I'm not the one doing the teaching #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
It looks as though everyone is chatted out! #mathchat
Caro_lann:
It might be Twitter. Had some failed tweets. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Well, we'll keep going for the last 15 minutes with those who can anyway... #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
I have switched to TweetGrid, it seems to be better for the moment... #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@Caro_lann I agree! My Twitter & Tweetdeck are really slow at updating #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
#mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@suser1 It's pretty powerful when it happens #mathchat

@iteachyear4 Yes, peer-teaching very effective! #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog: How do you handle corrections or errors when kids 'teach' others... #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Does anyone cross teach math, like some do with Guided Reading? I don't know the official term. #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@ColinTGraham record on Smart notebook software. Can replay how chn are tackling a problem #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Some kids know when another models. I usually pick probl that I've glanced at be4 they come up. Sometimes I want the mistake #mathchat
esolcourses:
@iteachyear4 @ColinTGraham some numeracy resources on our site 4 low level EAL students U might find useful: http://bit.ly/cEjpev #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@iteachyear4 Is it the record button? #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog Do you mean using 3x3 activity grids type of approach, where Ss have to complete a line of 3? #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
I feel it's important to have the mistakes so they can see how to fix it. It's part of the problem #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@esolcourses Thanks, will put that on the Wiki later! #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@ColinTGraham Not sure what you mean? #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog I think I meant to ask do you do the correcting or try to get the Ss to do it? #mathchat
mrdfleming:
@suser1 The Sisters are developing a Daily Five Math program! #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
I was thinking about http://bit.ly/938Tk5 a type of guided reading activity RT @maxxakahotdog: Not sure what you mean? #mathchat

maxxakahotdog:
@suser1 I've wanted 2 try it as well. i've been hearing about math workshop & I've done some reading. I'll be investing it further #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@ColinTGraham I try to get the kids to do it, at first I've got to model it for them #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
RT @Caro_lann: set a group problem for discussion and ask for examples of when methods do and don't work. See M Swann #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Any online pointers for Daily 5 for those not familiar with it? #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@tcash I've watched some video of Daily 5 Math. Like the concept, some of it is a bit too young for my students #mathchat
mrdfleming:
@suser1 Don't know if you have membership to http://bit.ly/3runbj but I highly recommend it. There are videos there #mathchat
melhutch:
RT @tcash: Daily 5 is very effective read/write.. nice! RT @mrdfleming: The Sisters are developing a Daily Five Math program! #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@ColinTGraham No wasn't thinking that. More of one teacher takes lower group, another takes middle grp. More like leveled groups #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
I've tried the 3x3, where column has more difficult and easier activities either side of centre. #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Top row is most difficult, Left and Right columns are different applications. Ss do centre square then make a line of 3... #mathchat
iteachyear4:
@maxxakahotdog yes. Let's you set problem and record how they solve it. Then get others to review what they did. #mathchat
melhutch:
Has anyone used math menus- I saw these books but don't know them- we developed some menushttp:tinyurl.com/2eu398x #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@maxxakahotdog Ah, that can work if timetabling allows and where one teacher may be better able to handle higher/lower levels #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@Caro_lann Yes, every1gets the same prbm but how it's slvd is the Diff Ins. We talk about the strategies as opposed to the answer. #mathchat
melhutch:
@ColinTGraham Is it a little like the RAFT strategy? http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/de/pd/instr/strats/raft/#mathchat
Caro_lann:
@ColinTGraham #mathchat 3x3 sound useful. Are there examples anywhere?
ColinTGraham:
OK, we are officially over time now, but please feel free to stay on and chat! Follow new people and @mathchat for updates! #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
Thank you all for another great chat, don't forget to vote for the next topic! #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
Thanks everyone. Hopefully next time tweetdeck & twitter will cooperate better. #mathchat Looking forward to Thurs. chat
ColinTGraham:
@Caro_lann Mine were all done on Roneo worksheets... so not electronic! You could probably adapt from link I gave earlier... #mathchat
maxxakahotdog:
@suser1 U've also got 2 have all buy in #mathchat It would definly help st if this happend. Our school is very diverse in teaching styles.
ColinTGraham:
@melhutch Not so much. The example I shared is to give Ss choice of what they worked on while teacher listens to individuals read #mathchat
ColinTGraham:
@melhutch I was suggesting that the tic-tac-toe grid could be adapted for similar types of problem for DI & Ss choose own level #mathchat
